New Year’s Resolutions for Moms Who Are Doing It All

Here we are—another year, another chance to dream big and start fresh! But let’s be real. As moms of kids with special needs, life doesn’t magically calm down just because the calendar flips to January. If you’re anything like me, you probably juggle about a million things daily: homeschooling, therapies, managing meltdowns, cooking meals, and maybe even squeezing in some work or self-care (ha!). But that doesn’t mean we can’t set resolutions. It just means we need ones that work for us. So, grab a cup of coffee (or tea—whatever fuels your soul), and let’s talk about some realistic, meaningful goals for the new year.

1. Give Yourself Grace (Yes, It’s a Resolution!)

Let’s start with the most important one. Mama, it’s okay not to have it all together all the time. Life with special needs kids is unpredictable, and some days are just about surviving. This year, let’s promise to forgive ourselves for the messy house, the fast-food dinners, and the days we can’t do it all. Grace is a gift, and we deserve it as much as anyone else.

2. Simplify Where You Can

You don’t need to do everything the hard way. Maybe that means investing in tools that make life easier, like a meal planning app, a visual schedule for the kids, or storage bins that actually keep the chaos contained.

3. Make Time for Yourself (Even if It’s Just 10 Minutes)

This one’s hard, I know. But even 10 minutes a day to read a book, journal, or take a hot shower can make a difference. Your mental health matters, and when you take care of yourself, you’re better equipped to care for your family.

4. Focus on One Thing at a Time

It’s tempting to set a dozen resolutions, but let’s pick one thing to work on at a time. Maybe it’s creating a sensory-friendly homeschool space, starting a new therapy routine, or decluttering a single room in your house. Small wins add up!

5. Celebrate the Small Victories

In our world, progress looks different. It might be your child saying a new word, trying a new food, or just sitting still for five minutes during a lesson. This year, let’s celebrate those moments instead of comparing ourselves to families with different journeys.

6. Try Something New Together

Whether it’s a craft project, a new recipe, or even a sensory-friendly family outing, trying something new can bring so much joy. Bonus points if it’s something that lets your kids express themselves and learn along the way!

7. Save Money Where You Can

Raising kids with special needs can be expensive, but there are ways to save. This year, let’s swap tips on budget-friendly homeschooling, affordable sensory tools, and DIY therapy ideas.

8. Connect with Other Moms Who Get It

Being a special needs parent can feel isolating, but you’re not alone. Whether it’s joining an online group, chatting with a fellow mom, or even hanging out here on The Mama Bear Mission, connection makes the journey easier.
